Technological breakthrough! Dalian Institute of Chemical Technology has developed a new technology for hydrogen production from seawater to freshwater.

Recently, a team of researcher Deng Dehui and associate researcher Liu Yanting from the Energy and Environment Small Molecule Catalysis Research Centre (Cluster 509) of the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis Fundamentals, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), has developed a new technology for hydrogen cogeneration from seawater to produce freshwater, focusing on the needs of hydrogen production for near-shore/off-shore offshore wind power, and has completed the testing and validation of the 25-kilowatt-class device based on this technology.

In recent years, China's installed capacity of offshore wind power has continued to increase significantly. As of 2022, the cumulative installed capacity of China's offshore wind power has exceeded 30 million kilowatts, accounting for about 54% of the world, and the problem of in situ consumption of near-shore/off-shore offshore wind power is becoming increasingly prominent. The development of offshore wind power based electrolysis hydrogen technology is of great significance in solving the problems of local consumption of offshore wind power and energy shortage, and realising the goal of "double carbon". However, offshore wind power electrolytic water hydrogen production technology currently exists in the shortage of freshwater resources, seawater composition is complex and other issues, there is an urgent need to develop new methods and new technologies for the preparation of green hydrogen using seawater as raw material.
